    Land of Squish

The land of squish is my made up world where all my slugs live.

    Material

Each slug is made with white earthenware to midfire clay. I use a compilation of underglaze, glazes and lusters to decorate my slugs. For more info scroll down to "It begins with some clay".

    Hand Made Imperfections

Each slug is handmade and painted, which means every single one is completely unique and perfectly imperfect. I try to include lots of photos so you can see all the tiny slimy details before adopting your slug.

Because they’re lovingly handmade, some slugs may feature little quirks like fingerprints, brush marks, minor crazing or other small imperfections that make them one of a kind little creatures.

    Returns

Please check the photos carefully and read all the information provided about the slugs before adopting. Remember that these are handmade and painted sculptures, so little imperfections and quirks are all part of their charm. 🐌

I do not offer returns for slugs, as each one is handmade and completely unique.

If your slug arrives damaged, please contact me as soon as possible and include clear photos of the damage and packaging so we can figure out the best solution together.

Unfortunately, I can’t offer refunds or replacements for slugs that are broken days after delivery.

    It begins with some clay

I start by pinching the clay into a sluggy, blobby forms. Once the bodies are made, I shape each eye and attach them with slip. Then I stamp their bums with my maker’s mark and send them to bed.

    Take a little nap

Once the little sluglets are made, I pop them on a shelf to dry. Some slugs dry in a day, others take a whole week it all depends on their size and how the weather decides to ooze along

    Let's get messy!

Painting my little slugs is the real time gobbler! Each colour needs at least two coats of underglaze, and I usually layer on two to four. Even if a slug wears the same outfit as another, their hand-painted quirks make sure no two slimy friends ever look exactly alike.

    Time for some heat!

Now that my slugs are sharply dressed it's time for their first firing. I have an excellent little kiln at my studio in Coburg.

The first firing, called a bisque firing, goes up to 950°C and preps my little slimy friends for the next step

    Skinny Dip?

It's time to dip my slugs in a lovely clear gloss glaze. This will give my slugs that beautiful slippery slimy look.

    Let's get roasting!

Back in the Kiln they go. It's time for the glaze firing!

Opening this firing is definitely my favourite part of the process! I finally get to meet my slimy friends!

    A touch of gold

The final, gleaming step in this slimy adventure is adding a touch of gold or opalescent luster! I use a 10% gold luster, and painting it can be a bit tricky (and toxic!), so I always don my trusty PPE to stay safe. Then comes an extra firing up to 750°C. And oh, is it worth it look at those little sluggy friends sparkle and shine like tiny treasures!

    Ready to adopt!

Once they wiggle their way out of the kiln, my little slimy friends are ready to find their forever homes! Since it’s such a long and careful process, online adoptions happen a bit sporadically.
